Ingredients
Gather your ingredients to make this tasty cake.

- All-purpose flour : This forms the base of your cake, giving it the structure and texture you expect from a soft, moist cake.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder : Adds a rich cocoa flavor to balance out the sweetness and creates that signature red velvet taste.
- Sugar : Sweetens the mug cake, providing a perfect balance with the slight bitterness of the cocoa.
- Baking powder : This helps the cake rise, giving it that fluffy texture.
- Milk : Provides moisture and helps the dry ingredients combine into a smooth batter. Substitute this with almond milk or coconut milk to make this a vegan mug cake.
- Vanilla extract : Adds a warm, aromatic flavor that enhances the overall taste of the cake.
- Coconut or vegetable oil : Ensures the cake stays moist and tender, giving it a rich, soft texture.
- Food coloring: The key to the iconic red hue that makes this mug cake so visually appealing.
- Optional Frosting – Cream cheese and icing sugar make a delicious frosting for the red velvet mug cake.

How to Make A Red Velvet Mug Cake
When making an egg-free mug cake, I find it easier to mix the dry ingredients first before adding the wet. You could always add them all to the mug and mix thoroughly!

Add dry ingredients to mug and mix.

Stir in the wet ingredients.

Add red food coloring.

Microwave until firm.
Recipe Tips
- Use fresh food coloring: The amount of food coloring can vary depending on the brand, so be sure to use just enough to achieve the signature red hue.
- Consistency check: The batter should be pourable but not too runny. If it seems too thick, you can add a little extra milk to loosen it up.
- Mix gently: Stir the ingredients just until combined. Overmixing can lead to a dense texture.
- Toppings: For extra indulgence, top the cake with whipped cream or a drizzle of cream cheese frosting to complement the red velvet flavor.

Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder, unsweetened
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 5 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons coconut or vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
Optional Cream Cheese Topping
- 2 teaspoon cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
Instructions
- Choose a microwave-safe mug and make sure it's large enough to accommodate the batter as it rises (a 12 oz mug works well).
- In the mug, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and baking powder. Make sure everything is well combined to avoid any lumps.
- Add the milk, vanilla extract, and coconut or vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring to the batter. Stir until you achieve your desired red color. Add more coloring if needed.
- Microwave the mug on high for 1 minute and 15 seconds. Keep an eye on it as it cooks, since microwave power can vary. The cake should rise and set in the middle.
- If the cake looks a bit undercooked, microwave it for an additional 10-15 seconds until it’s fully set. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
- Allow the mug cake to cool for a minute before digging in. It will continue to set a bit as it cools.
- For extra decadence, top your red velvet mug cake with whipped cream or a dollop of cream cheese frosting. For the frosting, mix the cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth. Top with heart sprinkles!
